Summary:

These papers consist primarily of scientific correspondence relating to taxonomic identification and the loan and exchange of specimen material. Correspondents include Preston E. Cloud, Jr., Helen M. Muir-Wood, Charles Schuchert, Edward Oscar Ulrich, and Alwyn Williams. Also present is routine administrative correspondence documenting Cooper's tenure as Head Curator of the Department of Geology. Material compiled by his predecessors is also included. Of special interest is correspondence relating to bequests; nineteenth-century correspondence among brachiopod specialists; reports regarding the modernization of exhibits; and field notes and manuscripts of William F. Foshag, who preceded Cooper as Head Curator in the Department of Geology. Extensive field notes from the two major localities where Cooper collected, the Hamilton formation of New York State and the Glass Mountain region of West Texas, are present, as well as from expeditions to the eastern and central United States, Quebec, and New Brunswick. The field notes for some of this work are complemented by photographs. Also included are manuscripts of papers and speeches, Cooper's complete M.S. thesis, and an incomplete draft of his Ph.D. dissertation.

Historical Note

G. Arthur Cooper (1902- ), paleobiologist emeritus at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), distinguished himself as an authority on the taxonomy and stratigraphy of Paleozoic brachiopods. He first developed an interest in natural history by collecting insects and minerals during his childhood in New York. During his adolescence his interest in minerals grew, and he received his B.S. degree in chemistry with a minor in geology from Colgate University in 1924. Cooper continued research on stratigraphy of upper New York state and was awarded the M.S. degree from Colgate University in 1926 on the merits of this work. Cooper continued his graduate studies at Yale University under Carl O. Dunbar and Charles Schuchert. Under Schuchert's direction, he began his study of fossil brachiopods, an interest he maintained throughout his career. He received his Ph.D. in 1929, focusing on the stratigraphy of the Hamilton formation. While at Yale, he also served as assistant curator, 1928-1929, and research associate, 1929-1930, in the Department of Invertebrate Paleontology of the Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Cooper came to the Smithsonian in 1930 as assistant curator in the Division of Stratigraphic Paleontology of the United States National Museum (USNM). In 1941, he advanced to associate curator and in 1944 to curator of the Division of Invertebrate Paleontology. He was appointed head curator of the Department of Geology in 1957, and oversaw its division into the separate departments of Paleobiology and Mineral Sciences in 1963. He continued as chairman of the Department of Paleobiology through 1967 when he was appointed senior paleobiologist. After his retirement from federal service in 1974, he continued his research at the Smithsonian as paleobiologist emeritus until 1987.

During his years as an administrator, the paleobiology staff grew from two in 1944 to twenty in 1967 as Cooper sought to fill gaps of coverage in the department. Cooper was also the motivating force behind the split of the Department of Geology into two separate departments in 1963. By implementing these changes he stimulated growth and focused research on paleobiology. He also involved himself in space planning and supervision of the move into the new wings of the Natural History Building in 1963-1965.

Cooper is well known for his research on the taxonomy and stratigraphy of Paleozoic brachiopods. His major monographs include: Ozarkian and Canadian Brachiopoda (1938 with E. O. Ulrich), Chazyan and Related Brachiopods (1956), Morphology, Classification, and Life Habits of Productoids (Brachiopoda) (1960 with Helen M. Muir-Wood), and Permian Brachiopods of West Texas, vols. 1-6 (1969-1977 with Richard E. Grant). Throughout his career, he conducted extensive field work in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, significantly increasing both the range and depth of the national collections. Under his guidance, an acid-etching laboratory was established for work with silicified fossils, notably Permian brachiopods from the Glass Mountains of Texas. He also developed his own photographic laboratory, where he produced over fifty thousand images from the collections. Many honors have been presented to Cooper over the years, including the Mary Clark Thompson Medal of the National Academy of Sciences, 1958; the Paleontological Society Medal, 1964; the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal of the National Academy of Sciences, 1979; the Penrose Medal of the Geological Society of America, 1983; and the James Hall Medal of the New York State Geological Survey, 1986.

Descriptive Entry

The papers of G. Arthur Cooper offer broad documentation of his professional career. The collection documents his interest in taxonomy and stratigraphy; his scientific research on fossil brachiopods; his extensive field work in the United States, Canada, and Mexico; his curatorial duties and administrative activities in the Departments of Geology and Paleobiology, NMNH, including the development of the invertebrate paleontological collections; and his role in professional societies.

Series 1 consists mainly of the extensive correspondence Cooper maintained with scientific colleagues in the paleontological community worldwide between 1940 and 1987. Incoming and outgoing correspondence documents the exchange of ideas and information on taxonomic identifications and classifications; field work; and the loan and acquisition of fossil specimens. Scientific correspondence files also include photographs of specimens for identification; obituaries of colleagues; and nineteenth-century letters of Edward Oscar Ulrich and Thomas Davidson used for research purposes.

Series 2 contains travel and grant files, 1927-1968, that document communication with the Department while Cooper was in the field and records pertaining to grants for scientific research. It includes correspondence, memoranda, travel expense records, and itineraries from field trips, as well as grant proposals and records on Cooper's involvement in various professional societies.

Cooper's role as an administrator at the USNM and NMNH is documented in series 3. The correspondence, dated between 1933 and 1967, concerns activities of professional societies; bequests, including nineteenth-century correspondence and copies of wills and bequests; the relationship between the department and the Smithsonian Libraries; the Exhibits Modernization Program; and the opening of the paleontological halls, 1961-1963. Also included are a notebook, several manuscripts, and one folder of correspondence created by William F. Foshag during his tenure as head curator of the Department of Geology.

Overlap exists between series 1, scientific correspondence, and series 3, administrative correspondence; therefore, researchers should check both to ensure a complete search.

Series 4 consists of Cooper's manuscripts and text of speeches written before his arrival at the USNM and during the course of his career. Of special interest are Cooper's M.S. thesis, "Hamilton Group in Hamilton Township," and an incomplete draft of his Ph.D. dissertation, "Hamilton Group of New York." Oversize figures for several of these manuscripts are housed off site. It is recommended that researchers make prior arrangements with the reference staff when requesting this material.

Series 5 and 6 consist of field notes, photographs, and slides taken by Cooper during his collecting trips. Field notes and photographs from his early work in New York State, the Gaspe region of Quebec, and a variety of localities across the United States are included in these divisions. His field work and research on the Hamilton formation in New York and Glass Mountains in Texas are especially well documented.

Additional information about Cooper can be found in Record Unit 328, the chairman's files of the Department of Paleobiology, 1940-1978; Record Unit 9523, oral history interviews of Cooper; and Record Unit 9529, videohistory interviews of Cooper.

Container List

SCIENTIFIC CORRESPONDENCE, 1904-1993 AND UNDATED WITH RELATED MATERIALS FROM 1865-1892.

This series consists of the scientific correspondence of G. Arthur Cooper. His professional correspondence primarily concerns ongoing research, the traffic of museum brachiopod specimens through loans and acquisitions, and personal exchanges with colleagues and friends. Maps, photographs of specimens, and manuscripts are scattered throughout these files. Several fossil specimens were removed from the collection and returned to the National Museum of Natural History. Incoming and outgoing correspondence are both present. The files are arranged alphabetically by personal or organizational name, or by subject. Cooper's files were well-organized, and the Archives has maintained this order. Because of the quantity of correspondence relating to the loan and acquisition of specimens, the collection provides an excellent record of brachiopod traffic through and from the Institution during Cooper's tenure. A small percentage of the material in this series is dated prior to the 1940s; the files for Thomas Davidson and Edward Oscar Ulrich contain correspondence from the nineteenth century.

Series 2

TRAVEL AND GRANT FILES, 1927-1968, 1985 AND UNDATED.

This series consists of files documenting Cooper's travel and grants for scientific research. These records include correspondence between Cooper and department secretaries while Cooper was in the field, incoming and outgoing memoranda documenting travel and expenses, and records for several of Cooper's grants and other professional activities. The material provides excellent documentation of Cooper's expectations and the results of many of his field trips, as well as detailed accounts of his travels. The original order of the files has been maintained.

ADMINISTRATIVE CORRESPONDENCE, 1933-1967 AND UNDATED, WITH RELATED MATERIAL FROM 1888-1925.

This series consists predominantly of routine administrative correspondence of G. Arthur Cooper and his predecessor, William F. Foshag, during their tenures as head curator of the Department of Geology. Foshag served as head curator of the department from 1948 to 1956. Cooper succeeded him in that role until 1963, when he oversaw the splitting of that Department into the Departments of Mineral Sciences and Paleobiology. Cooper continued as chairman of the new Department of Paleobiology from 1963 to 1967. These files contain incoming and outgoing routine administrative correspondence of the department prior to and during Cooper's tenure as head curator. This series also contains some of Foshag's field notes and manuscripts. Bequest files contain nineteenth-century correspondence, copies of wills, and other original and copied bequest documents. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order by personal and institutional name. Although these files were maintained separately from those in series 1, there is overlap, thus both series should be checked to ensure a complete search.

Series 4

MANUSCRIPTS, 1925-1974 AND UNDATED.

This series consists of manuscripts, papers, and text of speeches written by Cooper. The material spans Cooper's career at the Institution, and several manuscripts predate his arrival at the USNM. Also included are Cooper's M.S. thesis, "Hamilton Group in Hamilton Township" and an incomplete copy of his Ph.D. dissertation, "Hamilton Group of New York." Most of the manuscripts are typewritten and appear to be near final or final editions. Researchers should also note that manuscripts, either written or co-authored by Cooper, are scattered throughout the previous series. Markings and notes for revisions are abundant; in some cases multiple versions of particular chapters exist. Because only a partial Table of Contents is present, the ordering of the manuscript is unclear. A universal pagination is not present nor are individual sections internally numbered. To avoid losing the order of the material, the pages of each section were numbered during archival processing. These numbers appear in pencil on the LOWER LEFT corner of the pages. Both the section identification and the page number are marked (e.g., for chapter III, page 6, the notation appears as III-6) and the order is precisely as it was originally found for that section.

Series 5

FIELD NOTES, 1926-1970.

This series consists of field notes taken by Cooper during trips to collect fossils. The notes span Cooper's career; included are extensive notes from his early work on the Hamilton formation and his later work in the Glass Mountains of West Texas. All the field notes were arranged in groups with numbered pages; subsequent references to the field work refer to these page numbers. The numerical sequence often continues across multiple seasons, but each separate group of localities has its own numerical sequence. For instance, the Glass Mountains field notes consist of a virtually complete numerical series from 0070 to 1043 even though more than twenty trips are represented. Each folder consists of one of these groups, and the folder list below identifies the endpoint for that sequence; however, missing numbers are frequent. Also, for many of the notes, the date is not readily apparent, and many groups clearly represent several collecting trips. Thus, the page notation sequence may not provide a chronologically accurate series. The photographs and slides in series 6 complement the field notes for some of these localities.

Series 6

PHOTOGRAPHS AND SLIDES, CIRCA 1924-1945, 1958-1976, 1993.

This series contains photographs and slides mostly taken during Cooper's field work. Few photographs can be precisely dated by the content of the pictures, but the collection probably spans the mid 1920s to mid 1940s. The slides are dated 1958-1959, 1962, 1964-1968, and 1976. Only a small portion of the many photographs Cooper took during his career is represented here. The thousands of photographs he took of fossil specimens remain with those collections in the National Museum of Natural History. These photographs and slides are primarily records of geological formations and field work localities and those taken during vacations. The majority of the collection falls into the first category, although some of Cooper's photographs do appear to have been taken for aesthetic rather than scientific reasons. The slides are supplemented by detailed notes and a letter written by Cooper describing the subjects and the circumstances behind the slides. The notes have been numbered during processing to correspond with the box numbers of the slides, and the letter is located in Box 36, Folder 8. Also included in this series is a copy of an oversize original photograph of Charles Schuchert. Photographic negatives and prints are present. All nitrate negatives have been removed and copied onto safety film. The original arrangement has been preserved.
