African American communities have celebrated Juneteenth for more than 150 years. When did the Smithsonian begin hosting programs to commemorate the nation’s second independence day?

One of the ways the Anacostia Community Museum has served its community is through celebrations and educational programming about Kwanzaa.

Sharon Reinckens, Deputy Director, Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, has served as Acting Director, Senior Designer, and Supervisory Visual Information Specialist at the museum, 1980–present. Reinckens also produced award-winning documentaries about African American artists in Washington D.C for the museum. #Groundbreaker

Zora Martin Felton was founding Director of the Education Department at the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum for over thirty years. She served as Acting Director of the museum in 1989. #Groundbreaker

Louise Daniel Hutchinson (1928-2014) was founding Research Director at the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum, now the Anacostia Community Museum, and was a pioneer in both oral and community history. #Groundbreaker.

Senior Curator and Historian Portia James (1953-2015) pioneered a community-based approach at the Anacostia Community Museum and led the exhibitions, publications and collections programs. She researched African American material culture. #Groundbreaker

Director Lori Yarrish, Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, led the museum during its 50th year to adopt a community-driven model increasing collaboration with D.C. Public Schools on issues such as sustainability and healthy eating. #Groundbreaker
