Smithsonian Records Disposition Schedule

I have heard that there is a document for my museum or unit that tells us what to do with our records when we no longer need them. What is this and where can I find it?

Answer: A records disposition schedule provides guidance on how long different types of Smithsonian records need to be kept and whether they should be transferred to the Archives or destroyed when they are no longer needed in the office. Completed records disposition schedules for museums and units are accessible by all Smithsonian Institution staff. If you do not find a schedule for your museum or unit, contact your Archives liaison. A draft or preliminary schedule may exist for your museum or unit. If not, your Archives liaison will appraise your records.
