Preservation Formats

Contact the Electronic Records Archivist (SIA-DigitalServices@si.edu) for SIA guidance on the primary and secondary formats employed for long-term preservation of digital objects. We pursue technology-neutral solutions where possible.

Storage: Media & Handling

Redundant storage in offsite and underground locations is part of our standard practice. Intermediaries and reference copies are kept onsite, usually online, at the Archives' main facilities.

Upon request, the Archives will make a copy of requested digital holdings for researchers who are unable to visit the Archives to conduct their research. For more information, contact the IT Archivist (ferranter@si.edu). To request any Electronic Record holdings, contact the Reference Team.

The Archives is actively engaged in capturing and retaining websites of varying complexity and sophistication. We are addressing issues of distributed web material, interactive applications, dynamic content, XML, and web content management systems. For the full story...

To appraise and schedule electronic records received and retained by the Smithsonian Institution in the conduct of official business.
