The Bigger Picture: Visual Archives and the Smithsonian

Courtney Bellizzi

Courtney Bellizzi

What do you do?

I am in the Smithsonian Institution Archives’ History Division and help advance the knowledge and understanding of the history of the Smithsonian Institution by conducting research and sharing it with the public through reference responses, reports, blogs, and public programs.

Favorite spot in DC to recommend to visitors

I enjoy the Old Post Office Pavilion where you can take an elevator to the top for a 360 degree view of the city.

Collection Favorites

What I enjoy most about SIA collections is the variety of materials that I get to work with everyday. Each diary, notebook, letter or image has a surprise in store, whether it is finding a piece of jade taped to William Foshag’s field notes taken in South America, or sneezing uncontrollably at the dust on a Albert S. Hitchcock’s photograph album detailing a Panamanian expedition, each artifact has a way of connecting me to the past and to the people who created it, and that for me is what I love about history!
