Notes on Using SIA Collections

These are the Smithsonian Archives finding aids that currently exist in electronic form. In an attempt to better serve researchers, maintain the finding aids in the most accessible format, and keep the finding aids current, the Archives is constantly adding new electronic finding aids to its website and revising old finding aids as appropriate. For access to finding aids that exist only in printed form and to consult previous versions of finding aids since transferred into an electronic format, email osiaref@si.edu for more information.

The majority of institutional records and special collections in SIA custody are open to research without restrictions. However, in some cases, sensitive materials will be restricted through agreement between the Archives and transferring offices or donors. Such restrictions are indicated at the beginning of each finding aid.

Access to restricted collections requires explicit permission from the transferring office or donor. Researchers must apply directly to the pertinent office or donor. For more information, contact the SIA Reference Staff (email osiaref@si.edu).
