Historical Note
The Division of Petrology was established in the Department of Mineral Sciences in 1964. In 1973, the name was changed to the Division of Petrology and Volcanology. Curators in the Division have included William G. Melson, Associate Curator in Charge, 1964-1973, and Curator, 1973- ; Thomas E. Simkin, Geologist, 1972-1973, Associate Curator, 1973-1974, and Curator, 1974- ; Richard S. Fiske, Curator, 1975- ; and Sorena Sorensen, Associate Curator, 1984- .
Descriptive Entry
This record unit consists of correspondence and memoranda documenting the operations of the Division of Petrology and Volcanology from 1975 to 1984. Most of the correspondence is written by the professional staff of the Division, but also included are letters of Museum Specialist Harold H. Banks, Jr. The records document the acquisition and identification of specimens, divisional administration, and professional activities of the staff.
