Summary:

These records document the video elements that comprise the "Dinosaurs" component of the "Dinosaurs/Insects" video, sold under the title, "Creatures Great and Small," of the Smithsonian Video Collection (SVC). The SVC was developed as a video series for general audiences and represented the Institution's first venture into the home video market. In addition to "Creatures Great and Small," the Office of Telecommunications, in collaboration with the Eastman Kodak Company, completed four other SVC projects in its first year (1989): "The Zoo behind the Zoo," "Flying Machines," "Gems and Minerals," and "First Ladies." Each video featured a behind-the-scenes look at the Smithsonian, its staff, work, and collections. People and places featured in "Creatures Great and Small" include paleontologists Nicholas Hotton, Walter C. Alvarez, Hans Dieter Sues, and Robert Bakker; and excavations at Proctor Lake, Texas. Materials include original video footage, window dubs, masters, and original sound. See Box 9 for VHS reference viewing copy.
