Summary:

This collection consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence between Sandhouse and professional colleagues. Most of the correspondence concerns the identification of specimens and her research on insects of the order Hymenoptera.

Historical Note

Grace Sandhouse (1896-1940) graduated from the University of Colorado in 1920, where she worked with Theodore D. A. Cockerell, who led her to the study of bees. She later earned her A.M. degree from the University of Colorado and the Ph.D. from Cornell University. In 1926, Sandhouse joined the United States Department of Agriculture as a Junior Entomologist in the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine. She remained with the USDA until her death, eventually reaching the rank of Associate Entomologist. Her specialty was the taxonomy of the order Hymenoptera, especially the superfamily Apoidea.
