These papers document John Alden Loring's association with the Bureau of Biological Survey and consist primarily of correspondence received by him while in the field. Most of the letters were written by Bureau Chief Clinton Hart Merriam and contain instructions for field work and identifications of collections made by Loring. Also included are a few letters concerning Loring's initial interest in natural history and his application for employment with the Bureau.

Historical Note

John Alden Loring (1871-1947) served as a field naturalist with the Bureau of Biological Survey, United States Department of Agriculture from 1892 to 1897. During that time he conducted extensive field surveys in all regions of the United States, as well as in Canada and Mexico.
