Included are financial records, grant requests, progress reports, correspondence, photographs, and manuscripts relating to three long-term research projects under his direction: the Ceylon project on ecology and behavior of elephants (1967-1976) and primates (1968-1982); the Smithsonian-Venezuela Research Project on vertebrate behavior and ecology (1974-1982); and the Panama project on sloth and anteater research (1971-1977). Also included are general subject and correspondence files concerning research projects at NZP and abroad, as well as events and exhibits at NZP; correspondence and information about Eisenberg's publications and membership in numerous professional societies; and guidebooks, maps, and pamphlets from zoological parks that Eisenberg visited throughout the world. |
Historical Note
John Eisenberg was born June 20, 1935 in Everett, Washington. He received a B.S. at Washington State University in 1957 and an M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1959. He received a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1962 and went to the University of British Columbia, where he stayed from 1962 to 1964 as an assistant professor of zoology. In 1964 he accepted a post at the University of Maryland, College Park, as assistant professor of zoology and in 1965 was made research associate professor of zoology. In 1972 he became a research professor at the University of Maryland. In 1973 he was made an associate of the Department of Mental Hygiene at Johns Hopkins University, and he held this title until 1978.
In 1964 the National Zoological Park (NZP) organized a division to do research. On September 1, 1965 Eisenberg was appointed to the post of resident scientist in the Division of Research at the National Zoological Park. He worked with Edwin Gould of John's Hopkins University on an ecological and behavioral study of the tenrecoid insectivores of Madagascar from January 1966 to April 1966. In January 1967 he left for Ceylon to initiate an elephant research project. At the end of January he returned to Madagascar to continue his studies of the tenrecoid. In April he returned to Washington, D.C., then flew back to Ceylon in May for field inspections of the elephant project.
He started a year-long residency in Ceylon June 10, 1968, and during October did another field inspection as well as teaching a course to Ceylonese personnel on immobilizing wild elephants. In January he met with Dr. Paul Leyhausen of the Max Planck Institute. By 1970 the fieldwork on the Ceylon Elephant Project was complete. In 1971 the research division, under his direction, started the captive breeding of papcaranas and a research project on sloths in Panama. In March he was the acting director for the Zoological Program; he went back to being resident scientist in 1972 because the Zoological Program was dissolved.
The study on the sloth continued in Panama during 1972. He became president of the Animal Behavior Society in 1973, and the scientist in charge of the office of Scientific Research at the National Zoological Park. The sloth study continued in Panama, led by Dr. G. C. Montgomery. During 1974 progress was made on 24 research projects that included: the sloth study, a study of the behavior scoring of female mammals in heat, and reproduction in caviomorph rodents. He was also involved with the Thirteenth International Congress of Ethology that took place in Washington, D.C.
In January 1975 he left for Venezuela to do herpetological and mammalian studies, and research in Venezuela continued until June. The Venezuelan field projects at Guatopo National Park and the ranch of Sr. Tomas Blohm started in earnest in 1976. During 1977 the Venezuelan projects continued, and a new project on the vocal communication in cogeneric wrens started in Panama. These projects continued through 1978, and a new project studying the toque monkey in Ceylon started as well. In 1979 Dr. Eisenberg was made the assistant director for animal programs at the National Zoological Park. He became responsible for all animal and educational programs run by the National Zoological Park. Vertebrate Ecology in the Northern Neotropics, which he edited, was published in 1980 by the Smithsonian Press.
In 1981 he did a field study of the Cuban solendon in Cuba and visited various national parks in India. In April he spent three weeks in China discussing the possibility of setting a series of research projects based in a national park. In September his monograph, The Mammalian Radiations, was published. He also received the prestigious C. Hart Merriam award from the American Society of Mammalogists in 1981. He continued in the post of assistant director of animal and education programs until August 21, 1982, when he resigned to become Ordway professor of ecosystem conservation at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Descriptive Entry
The Venezuela Project (1974-1982) was one of three big projects that Dr. Eisenberg directed during his time at the National Zoological Park. The papers documenting this project include grant information and progress reports, correspondence between Sr. Tomas Blohm (research took place on his ranch), information on personnel who participated in the project, financial records connected to the project, background information and publicity, and other correspondence. Included are photographs and newspaper clippings.
The Ceylon Project included research on elephants (1967-1976) and primates (1968-1982). Papers connected to this project include a research agreement with the Ceylonese government, grant information and progress reports, financial records, correspondence with Dittus Wolfgang, George McKay, and other researchers in Ceylon, and information on elephant immobilization techniques learned from the Ringling Brothers' elephant handlers. Angela Daugharty writes an interesting letter connected to the elephant project. Suzanne Ripley, co-investigator, was an integral part of the research done in Ceylon, but none of her correspondence is found here. Oddly enough the correspondence between Eisenberg and Ripley is found in box 16. Papers document research on pregnant elephants and dugongs. Correspondence from contacts within the Ceylonese infrastructure is included.
The Panama project was the third large, long-term project that Dr. Eisenberg was involved in. In Panama research centered on sloths, howler monkeys, iguanas, anteaters, and various plant studies done in conjunction with the two-toed sloths. All of these are represented to some degree in the Panama files. Grant and financial records, logistics paperwork, progress reports, and several manuscripts are also included. Correspondence is mainly from Dr. Montgomery, who led the research effort in Panama.
Dr. Eisenberg, in his capacity as head of the research office at the National Zoological Park, received information from many sources on many subjects. The bulk of this paperwork can be found in his subject files. Information in these files comes from research projects as well as events within the Zoological Park. Subjects touched upon include a memorandum listing possible projects for the 1976 Bicentennial at the National Zoological Park, a memorandum on carcasses, correspondence on the Deer Project, various research reports, and reports on the Sleep Project. Information from the Smithsonian Foreign Currency Program is also included.
Like the subject files, the general correspondence files cover a broad spectrum of people and activities, and document Eisenberg's career within and outside the Smithsonian. Correspondence comes from educators, graduate students, Smithsonian staff, research scientists, members of professional societies, and curators. Many of these contacts are personal and some are international; they include discussion of possible drugs to immobilize wolves, letters from people inquiring about the white tigers, letters on speaking engagements, references provided by Eisenberg, and even a Christmas card. Some correspondents also sent reports dealing with research in the zoological field.
Eisenberg was a member of many scientific societies and published in many scientific journals. He was often invited to attend conferences and to review articles by other scientists in his field; this component of his professional life is documented in this collection. Papers include book reviews by Eisenberg, letters from Elsevier Scientific Publishing Company, correspondence between Eisenberg and various publishers, reports on various topics, newsletters from the Animal Behavior Society, correspondence on conferences (mostly Animal Behavior Society), information on International Ethological Conferences, research proposals, Carnivore roundtables, symposiums sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, and correspondence from academic institutions.
Other miscellaneous files document his work in education, at the National Zoological Park as an administrator and as a researcher, and in various professional organizations. In one case papers document his relationship with a fellow employee. Files include a research proposal for the elephant physiology project, correspondence between Eisenberg and various coworkers (especially Suzanne Ripley), manuscripts, and memoranda on zoo projects. Also included are guidebooks, brochures, and maps of zoos in the United States and abroad. Site plans, progress reports, and assorted financial records (including receipts from Ceylon), round out this component of the Eisenberg collection.

Folder 1 Grand. Correspondence to and from Dr. T. Grand of the Oregon Primate Center ranging from September 1966 to December 1974. Dr. Grand participated in the Ceylon Primate Project.
Folder 2 Hladic, Claude M. Correspondence to and from Dr. Claude M. Hladic and Annette Hladic ranging from May 1967 to March 1973. Also includes the vitae of the principal investigators (Eisenberg, Ripley, Grand, Hladic, and Manley).
Folder 3 Jayasuriya, Anil. Correspondence to and from Mr. Anil Jayasuriya of the Department of Zoology, University of Ceylon. Correspondence begins March 1969 and ends October 1970. Apparently Mr. Jayasuriya is also something of an interior decorator, and this is mentioned in the correspondence several times.
Folder 4 Leconte. Correspondence to and from Leconte and from various other people including Mr. S. Dillon Ripley, once the executive director of the Smithsonian Research Foundation. The correspondence begins October 1970 and ends August 1971.

Folder 8 An unlabeled file folder. Contents include a letter from Dr. Eisenberg to S. Karger of Switzerland dated January 1973, and dealing with an article by R. Rudran. The galley proof of the article is included. The article deals with the reproductive cycles of Purple-faced Langurs with relation to environmental factors.
Folder 9 An unlabeled file folder. Contents are a copy of an article by R. Rudran on Adult Male Replacement in One-troops of Purple-faced Langurs and its Effect on Population Structure.
Folder 10 Reproduction in P. Senex-Original of Final Draft. A copy of an article by R. Rudran dealing with the reproductive cycles of Purple-faced Langurs in regard to environmental factors. This article is a final draft, and changes are indicated.
Folder 11 Schickele. Correspondence to and from Mrs. Elizabeth Schickele starting April 1970 and ending September 1973. Contents include a research proposal, a vitae, and manuscript publishing. Mrs. Schickele was involved in dehydration and water studies involving Ceylon monkeys.
Folder 12 Shininger. Correspondence to and from P. S. Shininger starting February 1969 and ending August 1969.
Folder 13 U.S. Embassy-Colombo. Correspondence to and from the U.S. Embassy in Colombo starting August 1968 and ending April 1969. The letters mainly deal with logistic matters.
Folder 14 Zoo-Administration (Reed Perry, Winkleman, and Bridgwater). Correspondence to and from the administration of the National Zoological Park, Washington, D.C. The correspondence begins September 1968 and ends April 1969.
Folder 15 General Correspondence. Correspondence begins April 1975 and ends July 1969. Includes letters from Charles Santiapillai, Professor H. Crusz, Miss Virginia Durbeck of the Smithsonian Shops, and Miss Meredith Stanley. Most of the correspondence is to and from Mr. Santiapillai.
Folder 16 Ceylon Conference 1970. A letter on the subject of the African-Asian Elephant Conference dated January 1970. The letter includes a list of workers Eisenberg felt should be part of the conference if funding should become available to fly them to it.
Folder 17 Ceylon Air Shipments. Air waybills and government bills of lading. The dates run roughly from October 1967 to August 1970. Some of these are for the Elephant Project.
Folder 18 Dollar Salaries-Ceylon Personnel. Includes statements of earnings and leave, balance sheets for investigators, and a series of letters from Eisenberg in which he is trying to get his salary straightened out with Fiscal.
Folder 19 Sea Shipments. Bills of lading dated from January 1970 to February 1970. Household goods, personal goods, and preserved specimens were shipped this way.
Folder 20 An unlabeled file folder. This contains sheets detailing expenses for the Primate Project dating from November 1970 to January 1971.
Folder 21 Progress Reports Primate. Progress reports dating from February 1969 from Manley, Eisenberg, Ripley, Dittus, and a birthday card to John from his parents.
Folder 22 Publications-Primate. A bibliography of the publications associated with the Primate Project covering the years 1967 to 1978. A brochure by Wolfgang Dittus on why the Toque Monkey should be saved. A copy of an article by Manley dealing with wanderers among the Presbytis senex.
Folder 23 Vehicles. Information to Wolfgang Dittus and others explaining Smithsonian policy in regards to vehicles. Also explained is what to do in case of an accident, and information is given on insurance. This information is dated from December 1970 to December 1980.
Folder 24 Original Manuscript of Ecological Reconnaissance of Wilpattu National Park. This manuscript was written by John Eisenberg and Melvyn Lockhart, a research assistant. It includes maps and photos, and is 280 pages long.
Folder 25 Envelope from Dittus to Eisenberg. Contents are receipts dating from April 1971 to June 1971. They are for the Primate Project accounts and Polonnaruwa Camp. 6 smaller envelopes.
Folder 26 An envelope marked Dittus accounts. Contents are receipts dating from July 1971 to August 1971 for the Primate Project accounts and Polonnaruwa Camp. 4 smaller envelopes.
Folder 27 An envelope marked Dittus and Ripley accounts October to December 1970. Seven smaller envelopes and 2 bundles of typing paper.
Folder 28 Six bundles of receipts. These receipts are from Dittus and are for the Primate Project accounts and Polonnaruwa Camp. They are dated March 1971, January 1971, and February 1971.
Folder 29 An envelope marked Friends of the Zoo account. Contains statements from the Suburban Trust Company, deposit slip stubs, and stickers with Suburban's address.
Folder 30 3 envelopes bundled together with a rubber band. Contains the accounts for Ripley, Manley and Muckhenhirn for October, September, and August 1968.

Eisenberg Ceylon Elephant Project
Folder 1 Financial Report 7428 (Interim). Financial report on Grant #7428 for the study of the Ceylonese Elephant from the period December 1969 to December 1970. Also two interim reports dated January 1969 to June 1969, and from July 1968 to December 1968.
Folder 2 Elephant Project - Foreign Currency Grant and Request. Research proposals dated September 1966 for the elephants and some botanical research. A research agreement between the Smithsonian and the government of Ceylon. Letters announcing the granting of the funds for research dated June 1968.
Folder 3 Progress Reports - 1975 and 1976 Ceylon Elephant Project. Progress reports dated March, April, and May 1976, and one dated December (1975) and January, February 1976. These were sent to the Smithsonian Foreign Currency Program as part of a request for more funds to continue research.

Folder 6 Proposal to Continue Elephant Project Submitted November 26, 1974. Another renewal proposal submitted to the Smithsonian Foreign Currency Program dated November 1974. A memorandum mentions that Dr. Wolfgang Dittus will be the on-site supervisor for 1975 and 1976.
Folder 7 Elephant Extension Study - McKay. A single letter dated July 2, 1971 from S. Dillon Ripley to Mr. Harry Albers, the director of the Smithsonian Research Foundation. The letter announces that the Smithsonian Foreign Currency Advisory Council has granted $22,450 in excess rupees for the elephant research.
Folder 8 Continuation Beyond 1970 Ceylon Projects. Two proposals for the continuation of the study on the Ceylonese elephant. A brief note mentioning that Mr. McKay will go to Ceylon with two graduate students to continue research. The dates represented in this file go from June 1970 to June 1973.
Folder 9 Overall Program Ceylon. In a letter dated June 14, 1967 is an organizational chart that shows the structure of the complete research program centered in Ceylon. Primates, elephants, flora, and ecology are all subjects to be studied. There are memoranda and notes from personnel involved in the Flora of Ceylon project. The last one is dated June 1976.
Folder 10 Renewal Request for the year 1969. 3 copies of the renewal proposal for the study of the Ceylonese Elephant. Material is undated; however, it includes a budget request for 1969.

A copy of a report in which Dr. Eisenberg discusses one of the objectives of the research projects undertaken in Ceylon. This also includes a report detailing the meeting of the Smithsonian Foreign Currency Advisory Committee. These are dated February 1968. The correspondence ends September 1972.
Folder 26 Malwalsarache-Minister of State Ceylon. A letter from and a letter to E. E. Malwalsarache, Esquire, an assistant secretary of the Ministry of State in Ceylon. He requested some reports and received them. The letters are dated October 1967.
Folder 27 McKay, George. Correspondence to and from George McKay. This correspondence spans the period starting March 1967 to April 1974. McKay worked at the Teronga Zoo in Sydney Australia and then went to the Department of Zoology at the University of Ceylon.

A very full file folder containing official memoranda for the National Zoological Park, project reports, information and reports for the environmental sciences advisory council, what appears to be a transcript of a meeting of the environmental sciences advisory council on December 7, 1970, a report listing urgent environmental problems that would be suitable for study by the Smithsonian, a listing of ongoing projects at STRI, and the like. Materials date from April 1969 to August 1971.
Folder 9 Dr. Suzanne Ripley. A very full file folder that contains correspondence between Dr. Suzanne Ripley and Dr. Eisenberg dating from May 1969 to July 1972. In the May 1969 batch of letters Dr. Eisenberg asks Dr. Ripley to step down as co-investigator in the primate project or he will not renew the grant for the study.
