Lundeberg's involvement with these organizations from 1962 to 1984 is documented in his papers. Included are correspondence with colleagues regarding governance, meetings, and publishing efforts of the organizations; papers presented at meetings by Lundeberg and his colleagues; and materials distributed at meetings or published by the groups. Documented in particular detail are the publication of the Bibliography of the History of the Great Sea Routes by the International Commission of Maritime History; Lundeberg's column, The Museum Perspective in Military Affairs; the International Commission of Military History (ICMH) Colloquy on Military History, held in Washington in July 1982 and sponsored by the U.S. Commission on Military History; and NMHT security and safety concerns, including his role as Chairman of the Museum's Security and Fire Prevention Committee from 1971 to 1979. An audio recording from the International Conference on the History of Cartography, held in Washington, D.C., in August 1977, is also included. Some scholarly papers and correspondence with foreign colleagues is in French or German.

Historical Note

Philip K. Lundeberg (1923- ) received his B.A. from Duke University in 1944, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1954. After serving in the Navy, he was an Assistant Professor at St. Olaf College from 1953 to 1955, and at the United States Naval Academy from 1955 to 1959. He came to the Smithsonian in January 1959 as a Consultant in the Department of Armed Forces History in the Museum of History and Technology, and in June of that year was appointed Associate Curator in the Division of Naval History. From 1961 to 1984 Lundeberg was Curator of the Division in what became in 1980 the National Museum of American History (NMAH). He became a Curator in the NMAH Division of Transportation in 1984.

Lundeberg held positions in a number of national and international professional organizations. He was President of the American Military Institute, the Council of American Maritime Museums, and the United States Commission on Military History, as well as Chairman of the International Congress of Maritime Museums, Secretary of the International Committee on Museum Security of the International Council of Museums, and a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Committee on Maritime Preservation.
