Summary:

These papers consist of correspondence and photographs documenting Henderson's career at the USNM and NMNH, and his research on meteorites. Most of the material dates from the 1960s and 1970s when Henderson was Curator Emeritus. Also included is an 1859 letter from an ancestor of Henderson's, Charles Henderson, to Martha M. Henderson, chronicling his trip across the Plains from St. Joseph, Missouri, to the California gold rush.

Historical Note

Edward P. Henderson (1898-1992), a chemist specializing in meteorites, received the B.S. and M.S. in chemistry from The George Washington University. From 1920 to 1929 he served as a chemist for the United States Geological Survey. In 1929, he was appointed Curator of Physical and Chemical Geology in the Department of Geology of the United States National Museum (USNM). He was named Curator of the Division of Meteorites, Department of Mineral Sciences, National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) in 1963. After his retirement in 1965, he continued his research as Curator Emeritus of the Division until 1988.

Descriptive Entry
