INTRODUCTION

This finding aid was digitized with funds generously provided by the Smithsonian Institution Women's Committee.


HISTORICAL NOTE

John Evans (1812-1861) joined David Dale Owen's survey of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota following his graduation from St. Louis Medical College, circa 1848. In 1851, he was appointed by the Secretary of the Interior to survey the Washington and Oregon territories, and in 1853 joined Isaac Stevens' Pacific Railroad Survey. He was also geologist to the Isthmus of Chiriqui Expedition to Central America in 1860.


DESCRIPTIVE ENTRY

These papers include a journal for Evans' tenure with the railroad survey, covering the period July to September 1854. They also include journals for Evans' journeys in the Port Orford region of Oregon in 1855-1856, and one page of Evans' journal for the Isthmus of Chiriqui Expedition of 1860.
