INTRODUCTION

This finding aid was digitized with funds generously provided by the Smithsonian Institution Women's Committee.


HISTORICAL NOTE

Andrew Nelson Caudell (1872-1936), orthopterist, joined the Division of Insects of the United States Department of Agriculture in 1898. He remained with the Department until his death and, also while there, served as custodian of the Orthoptera collection of the Division of Insects of the United States National Museum.


DESCRIPTIVE ENTRY

These papers consist of Caudell's notebooks, including entomological diaries, 1889, 1891-1892, 1914, 1916-1917, and 1920-1926. They contain daily entries concerning Caudell's personal affairs and scientific work; notes on breeding experiments with Orthoptera, 1922-1926; a loan record for books, 1914-1935; and a key to his insect collection. Also included is some correspondence of Caudell, especially with Morgan Hebard and P. Wytsman.
