HISTORICAL NOTE
Charles Fuller Baker (1872-1927) spent most of his career as a teacher of
agronomy and agriculture; but he maintained a steady interest in entomology,
which he indulged at every opportunity. Trained at Michigan Agricultural
College, he taught for several years in Colorado, Alabama, and Missouri before
going to California where, in 1903, he obtained the M.S. degree at Stanford.
After a brief stay at Pomona College Baker did further teaching and field work
in Cuba and Brazil, returned to Pomona for several more years and, in 1913,
became a professor of agriculture in the University of the Philippines. In
1918 he became Dean of that university's College of Agriculture, a post he
retained until his death. while Baker's entomological studies were
avocational, he contrived to make a significant addition to the United States
National Museum, to which his collection passed at his death.
DESCRIPTIVE ENTRY
These papers consist of correspondence with collaborators, and a few papers,
notes, and reprints dealing with Baker's collection interests, which were
focused largely on the central and south Pacific, southeast Asia, and
Australia. There is almost no reference to any of Baker's official
employments.
