Finding Aids to Official Records of the Smithsonian Institution Archives
Record Unit 69
Smithsonian Institution. Topographical Data Project
Topographical Data Project, circa 1873-1882
Descriptive Entry
The Smithsonian Institution and the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey collaborated in collection of data of relative elevations over the surface of the continent of North America, intending ultimately to publish a hypsometrical map. The collection of data was entrusted to Walter L. Nicholson, topographer of the Post Office Department, but in about 1882 the project and apparently most of the records were transferred to the Survey. The present records contain data accumulated by Nicholson and several railroad elevation maps. Dates of the collection are uncertain.
