Descriptive Entry

Publication of memoirs, or scientific papers, began in 1849 with the Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge. The papers in this record unit, apparently unpublished, consist of memoirs sent to or requested by the Smithsonian but for some reason not published. Many are undated, but nothing suggests that any of these papers predate the 1865 fire in the Smithsonian Building.
