Historical Note
Harald A. Rehder (1907-1996) served as a Curator in the Division of Mollusks, National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), from 1932 until his retirement in 1965. He continued to work at NMNH as a Research Associate from 1965 to 1985. Rehder was an internationally recognized specialist on the mollusks of the south and central Pacific Ocean. The author of over 140 books and papers on mollusks, Rehder was a member of several collecting expeditions, mostly to islands in the Pacific. He was active professionally and was a founder and president of the American Malacological Union (AMU).
Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of correspondence, manuscripts, notes, research materials, photographs, and 35mm slides documenting Rehder's curatorial career at NMNH; his malacological research; expeditions and field work; and professional activities, especially with the AMU. Researchers should also consult Record Unit 73 for Rehder's correspondence as Curator, Division of Mollusks, NMNH.
