Historical Note
Robert P. Higgins (1932- ) is an invertebrate zoologist and authority on the systematics and ecology of crustacea. He joined the Smithsonian in 1968 as an oceanographer. He served as Director of the Mediterranean Marine Sorting Center, 1969-1971; Director of the Oceanography and Limnology Program, 1971-1974; Acting Director, International Environmental Science Program, 1974; Senior Zoologist, 1974-1978; and Curator, Department of Invertebrate Zoology, National Museum of Natural History, 1978- . Higgins retired in 1996.
Descriptive Entry
These papers document the research career and professional affairs of Robert P. Higgins. They include correspondence between Higgins and professional colleagues documenting his research on crustacea; correspondence relating to his professional activities at the Smithsonian, 1969-1977; and correspondence documenting his service as Associate Editor of "Transactions of the American Microscopical Society," 1975-1979.
