Spencer F. Baird is elected to the position of Permanent Secretary of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, for the first 3 year term. On August 20, AAAS members voted to create this position with a term of 3 years and a salary of $300 per annum. The duties of the position are to compile for publication all proceedings or transactions of the Association, to superintend the publication, and to conduct the correspondence
