Summary

Biography of Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden, a geologist, naturalist, and explorer who had close ties with the Smithsonian throughout his early career. Secretaries Joseph Henry and Spencer F. Baird provided support for many of his expeditions, he donated many specimens he collected to the National Museum collections, many of his publications were exchanged with publications from other countires through the International Exchange Service, and he, like colleague Fielding B. Meek, lived in the Smithsonian Institution Building at various times throughout his early career.
