Summary

Geologist Kirtley Fletcher Mather (1888-1978) earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1915 and joined the faculty of Harvard University in 1924 as associate professor in physiography. Mather had volunteered to serve as an expert witness at the 1925 Scopes anti-evolution trial. Although he was not allowed to testify on the stand, his statement was entered into the court record. This photograph was taken in the 1920s, close to the time of the trial.
