Zoologist Winterton Conway Curtis (1875-1969) received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1901 and immediately joined the faculty of the University of Missouri, where he taught for the rest of his career. Curtis had traveled to Dayton to serve as an expert witness at the 1925 Scopes anti-evolution trial, where this photograph was taken. He was not allowed to testify on the stand, but his statement was entered into the court record.
