Summary

In 1954, Lt. Col. Pauline Kirby of the Army Nurse Corps (ANC) had just been appointed Chief of the Nursing Service at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. Kirby joined the ANC in 1926 and had served as the U.S. Army's assistant director of nurses in the Southwest Pacific during World War II, and assisted with the establishment of neuropsychiatric hospitals for wounded soldiers.
