In 1919, after graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Sanford L. Cluett (1874-1968) joined Cluett, Peabody & Co., a textile firm founded by his uncles, which made (among other things) Arrow shirts; among his 200 patents was one for Sanforizing, a textile treatment aimed at reducing shrinkage.
