Carl H. Berendt (1817-1878) worked in Mexico and Central America on the ethnology and philology of the native tribes. His work was supported in part by the Smithsonian, the Philadelphia Academy of Science, and the Chicago Academy of Science.

These papers include a letter to Joseph Henry on existing manuscript sources for the history of Guatemala, April 2, 1875; manuscript notes on Central America; and other notes and letters, some in Spanish.
