Notes:
In the early 1970s, the Office of Public Affairs reported to the Director of the National Museum of History and Technology (NMHT). Also included as part of the Office was the special events staff. In 1972, Rebecca B. Clapp was appointed Special Events Assistant for the Office of Public Affairs and Special Events, and became Special Events Officer in 1975. Geraldine B. Sanderson succeeded Clapp the following year and was made Public Information Officer in 1978. In 1980, Sanderson began reporting to the Director of the Office of Public and Academic Programs
When NMHT was renamed the National Museum of American History (NMAH) in 1980, the Office of Public Affairs again reported to the Director of the Museum. In 1982, Mary W. Dyer succeeded Sanderson as the Public Information Officer. From 1984 to 1985, the Office of Public Affairs was under the Department of Public Programs
The Office of Public Affairs is responsible for preparing, coordinating, and distributing information to the public and the media concerning activities at NMAH. Staff has included Rebecca B. Clapp, Special Events Assistant, 1972-1974, and Special Events Officer, 1975; Geraldine B. Sanderson, Special Events Officer, 1976-1977, and Public Information Officer, 1978-1981; and Mary W. Dyer, Public Information Officer, 1982-1985

Historical Note

In the early 1970s, the central Office of Public Affairs of the Smithsonian handled public affairs and special events of the National Museum of History and Technology (NMHT). In 1972 Rebecca Bean left that office to become first Special Events Assistant and then Special Events Officer for the Office of Public Affairs of NMHT and served until 1975.

Bean was succeeded by Geraldine B. Sanderson as Special Events Officer, 1976-1977, with a change of title to Public Information Officer, 1978-1981. In October 1981, the name of the Museum changed to National Museum of American History (NMAH). In 1982 Mary W. Dyer was appointed Public Information Officer and reported to the Director, 1982-1983. In 1984 the Office of Public Affairs was placed under the Department of Public Programs, and Dyer continued to serve, 1984- .

These records consist of press releases, memoranda, tapes documenting Museum activities, newspaper clippings concerning the Museum, correspondence, exhibition catalogues, exhibition scripts, invitations, guest lists, and photographs.
