Guide to the Smithsonian Videohistory Collection

Sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

The Videohistory Collection was created between 1986 and 1992 with a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Additional collections have been added since the Program ended. Under the aegis of the Smithsonian Videohistory Program, Smithsonian scholars produced original video footage for twenty-four different projects reflecting the Institution's concern with the conduct of contemporary science and technology. Scholars participated in the program to document visual aspects of their on-going historical research in the physical and biological sciences, as well as in technological design and manufacture. Projects were recorded in offices, factories, quarries, laboratories, and observatories to capture site, process, artifacts, and interaction most effectively.
