The National Museum of Natural History appointed an individual with special responsibility for educational programs, the Education Coordinator, in 1974. The position was retitled as the Supervisory Information and Education Specialist, 1980, and as Assistant Director for Education, 1987. The Office of Education plans, coordinates and conducts numerous Museum activities for students, teachers, families and the general public. As part of this effort the Office operates three hands-on learning centers, the Discovery Room, the O. Orkin Insect Zoo, and the Naturalist Center.
Joan Madden served as Education Coordinator, 1974-1980; Supervisory Information and Education Specialist, 1980-1986; and Assistant Director for Education, 1987-1988. Laura L. McKie was Acting Assistant Director for Education, 1988-1990, and Assistant Director, 1991-2001. Gloria Chernay served as Acting Assistant Director for Education, 2001- .
