The Coordinator of Special Programs was created in 1983 and changed to Head, Special Programs, 1987-1990. In 1991, a Special Events Coordinator was hired. From 1992 to the present, the director of the Office of Special Events has been Head, Special Events. The Office of Special Events reports to the Office of Membership and Development.

Esin Atil was the Coordinator of Special Programs and Head, Special Programs, 1983-1990. Patricia Bragdon was Special Events Coordinator, 1991-1992, and Head, Special Events, 1992 to about 1997. From 1997 to the present, Caroline Bedinger has held the position.

The Office of Special Events organizes and holds events, such as receptions, award presentations, concerts, openings of exhibitions, and visits by dignitaries.
