The National Museum of American History has long been interested in the study of the changing social and cultural character of American life as reflected in the medium of advertising. In 1989 the Center for Advertising History was formally created. It sponsored symposia, exhibitions, and publications on the history of American advertising and important figures in that field. Because of inadequate private support the Center was closed in about 1994.
Stacy Flaherty served as Director from 1989 to 1993. Tom Wiener succeeded her, 1993-1994.
