This position was created in 1989. The incumbent was initially engaged as Assistant Director, Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. That title seems to have been changed to Assistant Director, Research and Collections Division later. Apparently the position was discontinued after 1994. Forrest McGill held the post from 1989 until 1991. He was succeeded by Thomas W. Lentz, 1992-1994.
