The Office of Special Events originated as part of the public affairs activities of the National Air and Space Museum's Office of Public Affairs. Special Events assistants and coordinators reported to the Chief of the Office of Public Affairs until June 1990. At that time Special Events became part of the Development Office.

Professional staff of the Office of Special Events have included: Kathleen Spraggins, Director of Special Events, 1982-1996; Linda Hicks, Manager Special Events, c.1998- ; Darlene Rose-Barge, Special Events Coordinator, c.1984- ; Bridget McMinn, Program Coordinator, 1991; and Marilyn Kozak, Special Events Coordinator, 1994- . Anne Seeger served as Supervisory Development Specialist, 1997- .
