This accession consists of records created and maintained by Uta C. Merzbach, Curator of Mathematical Instruments, which document planning, development, and production of exhibitions at the National Museum of American History (NMAH). The exhibitions covered include the Hall of Physical Sciences; the Development of the Modern Computer, featuring historic computers and opened in conjunction with the twentieth annual meeting of the Association of Computing Machinery in Washington, D.C.; and a display case of the first Rowland Ruling Engine, a machine invented by American physicist Henry Augustus Rowland that inscribes very narrowly spaced and equidistant parallel lines on a surface of glass or metal. Earlier records date to when NMAH was known as the National Museum of History and Technology and the Museum of History and Technology; and when the Division of Mathematics was known as the Section of Mathematics and Antique Instruments, as well as from when the section was part of the Division of Electricity and Nuclear Energy. Materials include correspondence, notes, proposals, scripts, a floor plan, and press releases.
