This accession consists of records documenting the research of Don (Donald E.) Weller regarding land use in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Weller is a quantitative ecologist with expertise in ecological modeling and landscape ecology, using the quantitative tools of spatial analysis, mathematical modeling, and statistics to explore the factors controlling nutrient discharges from watersheds; the role of wetlands in moderating nutrient transport; the relationships between watershed characteristics and the ecological health of wetlands, streams, and estuaries; and carbon storage in coastal wetlands. Weller joined the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) as a Research Associate in 1983. He became Director of SERC's computer center and a staff scientist in 1992 and was named a senior scientist in 1997. Weller retired in 2019 but maintained status as a scientist emeritus. Materials in this accession include original maps, annotated published maps, aerial photography, transparency overlays, and related materials noting land use in the coastal plains and several tributaries to the Chesapeake Bay.
