Summary

This accession consists of the email account of Johnny Gibbons primarily documenting his activities as press secretary at the Smithsonian's Office of Public Affairs from 2008 to 2018. Gibbon promoted science, research, art, history, and culture across the Institution to the media and public. Prior to becoming press secretary Gibbon was a science writer and spokesperson for the National Zoological Park, Office of Public Affairs, 2004-2008; and in later years he briefly served as lead public affairs specialist at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Marketing and Communications, 2018-2019. Gibbon's account consists of more than 53,503 messages covering the time periods from September 2004, February 2005, April 2005, October 2005 to November 2005, August 2006 to January 2009, April 2009, and June 2009 to August 2019. The correspondence pertains to meetings; budget; strategic planning; reports; press releases; media scheduling and briefings; contracts; exhibition openings; conferences, symposia, and special events; committees; surveys; press kits; interviews; and awards. Materials are in electronic format.
