This accession consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence maintained by Robert B. Faden, emeritus research botanist and Associate Curator, 1980-2014, in the Department of Botany, whose research focuses on the evolution of Commelinaceae, seed dimorphism, African flora, plant anatomy, and reproductive biology. Materials include correspondence with United States and foreign botanists; directors and botanists of botanical gardens; scientific societies; and colleagues concerning botanical research, specimens, publications, and collecting expeditions. Some correspondence dates before Faden's tenure at the Smithsonian Institution. Supporting documentation includes notes, specimen lists, scientific publications, photographs, slides, brochures, and drawings.
