This accession consists of records that document the work of John Elfreth Watkins, Curator of the Section of Steam Transportation; George Colton Maynard, Assistant Curator, 1901-1912, Curator, 1912-1918; Carl Weaver Mitman, Aide, 1914-1915, Assistant Curator, 1915-1919, Curator, 1919-1938; Frank A. Taylor, Assistant Curator, 1928-1931, Curator, 1932-1948; and Richard Rathbun, Assistant Secretary in charge of the United States National Museum; regarding the Stourbridge Lion train, the first steam locomotive to operate in the United States, and its remaining pieces that were collected for the museum. The majority of the correspondence is with the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company which brought the Stourbridge Lion from England to the United States. Some records date to when the division was known as the Section of Steam Transportation, the Section of Transportation and Engineering, the Section of Technological Collections, Division of Technology, and the Division of Mechanical Technology. There is a small amount of material from Assistant Secretary in Charge of the United States National Museum. Materials include correspondence, notes, transcriptions, and clippings.
