Summary

This accession consists of records created and maintained by Marian Kaminitz, Head of Conservation, Conservation Department at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), 1991-2020. In her role as Head of Conservation, Kaminitz was responsible for overseeing the collections care across the museums three locations: the museum in Washington, D.C.; the George Gustav Heye Center in New York; and the Cultural Resources Center in Suitland, Maryland. While managing her staff of conservators, fellows, mount makers, contractors, and interns, Kaminitz also advised on museum-wide conservation issues and set conservation policies. Kaminitz was responsible for planning, implementing, and administering the Andrew W. Mellon endowment for conservation fellows and interns at NMAI. Materials in this collection document Kaminitz presentations, papers, journal articles, and workshops related to her conservation work. Additionally, the collection also includes records that document Kaminitz's role running the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation endowment for conservation fellows and interns. Some records date from before Kaminitz's time at the museum. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, presentations, seminar and education program records, papers and articles, grant records, reports, color photographs, color negatives, a videotape, and clippings. Some materials are in electronic format.
