This accession consists of approximately 172,500 email messages of Robert A. (Robert Armstrong) Rice, research geographer and ecologist at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, 1995-2019. The bulk of Rice's email documents the administration and marketing of the Smithsonian Institution's shade grown Bird Friendly Coffee certification program in which he played a key role in founding in the late 1990s. Other topics documented in this accession include research papers, professional activities, collaborations, meetings, travel, grants, data collection, and sustainable cacao. The messages cover the periods of October 2000, August 2001-July 2002, and September 2002-September 2019. The Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center is part of the National Zoological Park and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. Materials are in electronic format.
