Summary

This accession consists of the papers of Charles Greeley Abbot, Assistant Director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), 1895-1907; second Director of the SAO, 1907-1944; Assistant Secretary, 1918-1928; and fifth Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1928-1944. Topics covered include enrollment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); expeditions to the western United States, Europe, Africa, South America, and Canada to locate observatory sites such as the Mount Montezuma Station, the Table Mountain Station, the Mount Wilson Observatory, Mount Harquahala Station, the Mount Brukkaros Station, and the Mount Saint Katherine Station; personal and professional activities; and research. Also included are materials related to Abbot's early education, his first wife Lillian Elvira Moore and second wife Virginia Andes Johnson, equipment, and travel, including a visit to the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair. Materials include correspondence, photographs, negatives, photographic postcards, books, diplomas, scrapbooks, clippings, plates, guides, drawings, and other related materials.
