Summary

This accession consists of the email account of Spencer R. Crew, Interim Director for the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). After Founding Director Lonnie G. Bunch was appointed Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in 2019, Crew was tasked with serving as Interim Director while a national search was conducted for a permanent director. Crew graduated from Brown University and holds a M.A. and Ph.D. from Rutgers University. He previously served as Director of the National Museum of American History from 1994-2001 before becoming founding president of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center from 2001-2007. While serving as Interim Director, Crew was on a leave of absence from being the Robinson Professor of U.S. History at George Mason University. As Interim Director, Crew was responsible for the overall management of the museum's exhibits, programs, collections acquisitions, staff, and research activities. Crew's email account consists of approximately 31,660 messages and covers the time period of June 2019 to January 2021. The correspondence documents Crew's work on overseeing the operations, programs, and staff at the museum. Materials are in electronic format.
