  • The Smithsonian Institution Archives and the Smithsonian Libraries joined together to become the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives (SLA) in 2020. SLA is responsible for nearly 3 million library volumes, along with more than 44,000 cubic feet of archival materials, 3 million images, and some 20 terabytes of born digital records that chronicle the history of the Smithsonian. There are 20 branch libraries and central support services that include a Book Conservtion Laboratory and an imaging center. Branches are located in Smithsonian museums, research institutes and offices in Washington, D.C., New York City, Edgewater and Suitland, Maryland, and the Republic of Panama.
  • Scott E. Miller, Deputy Under Secretary for Collections and Interdisciplinary Support served as Interim Director, Smithsonian Libraries and Archives, 2020-2021. Tamar Evangelestia-Dougherty was appointed Inaugural Director and began her tenure in December 2021.
