This accession consists of records that document the tenure of Barbara Faust, Director, 2014-2019. Faust began her career at the Smithsonian Institution as manager of the Greenhouse Nursery Branch, from 1986-2004; and then became Associate Director from 2004-2013. As Director Faust served as the technical authority on all matters related to horticultural programs and activities and landscape architecture for the Smithsonian. She was responsible for the overall operation of the Smithsonian Gardens and the implementation of policies and the creation of programs that fulfill the mission of the Smithsonian. Some records come from when Gardens was known as the Horticulture Services Division and from when it was part of the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability. The bulk of the records document the work of Gardens in relation to their accreditation in 2013 by the American Alliance of Museums. The records also document conferences, strategic planning, and the publication, "A Guide to Smithsonian Gardens." Materials include correspondence, memoranda, presentations, press releases, annual reports, grant proposals, organizational charts, workshop records, book reviews, images, video recordings, flyers, brochures, and other related records. Materials are in electronic format.

- Smithsonian Gardens was established in 1972 to manage the Smithsonian Institution's museum grounds and serves to extend the museums' exhibits and learning environment in a public garden setting. Each of the gardens and landscapes are designed and planted to complement the museum they border and reflect the theme of that same museum. In addition, staff conduct public education events, organize its annual Smithsonian Garden Fest event, maintains a collection of more than 1700 antique furnishings and horticultural artifacts, and put on exhibits such as their orchid exhibit done in collaboration with the United States Botanic Garden and the National Museum of Natural History. Also part of Gardens is the Archives of American Gardens which collects and makes available for research images and documentation relating to thousands of historic and contemporary American gardens.
