Summary

This accession consists of the email account of Jacquelyn Days Serwer, Chief Curator at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). An American art historian and curator, Serwer received her undergraduate degree from Sarah Lawrence College, her masters from the University of Chicago, and her doctorate from the City University of New York. In 1985 Serwer became a curator at the National Museum of American Art (now the Smithsonian American Art Museum). Starting in 1999 she was the Chief Curator at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and then in May 2006 she became the Chief Curator at the NMAAHC. As Chief Curator, Serwer placed a critical role in building the museum's art collection documenting more than 200 years of African American visual expression.
