Summary

left to right: Major William Ellsworth Kepner (1893-1982), U.S. Army Air Corps, and Captain Albert William Stevens (1886-1949), U.S. Army Air Corps, were on the National Geographic Society - U.S. Army Air Corps team that made the first flight in the hydrogen balloon "Explorer" on July 29, 1934. The attempt to reach the stratosphere ended when the balloon envelope ruptured, causing the pressurized gondola to plunge. All crew members parachuted safely to ground.
