From Torch article: "Phil Helms from A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, N.C., an intern in MNH's freeze dry lab, first took a correspondence course in taxidermy at age 11. Preservation of animal specimens-fish, birds, and deer-has been his hobby since then. But at the Smithsonian he has broadened his knowledge by helping prepare some of the 800 specimens for an upcoming exhibit in 1978, including snakes, ducks, a fox, a raccoon, and even an armadillo."
