Secretary S. Dillon Ripley presents James Smithson Society Gold Medallion to Bern Dibner on behalf of the Smithsonian Board of Regents during a dinner in the Great Hall of the Smithsonian Institution Building, or Castle. Bern Dibner, an engineer, inventor and industrialist, collected rare books for decades and established the Burndy Library in Norwalk, Connecticut, in 1936, and donated to the Institution a library of 25,000 rare books in the history of science and technology to be housed at the National Museum of History and Technology, now known as the National Museum of American History.
