This accession consists of the email account of Ramiro Matos Mendieta, Associate Curator, Office of Latin America, and includes approximately 5,858 messages documenting his research and activities. Matos Mendieta's research interests include Andean archaeology and ethnography, Inka provincial administration, Inka ethnohistory, and the Inka Road system. The bulk of the correspondence relates to Matos Mendieta's work as co-curator on the exhibition, "The Great Inka Road: Engineering an Empire" which was presented at the National Museum of the American Indian from June 26, 2015 to June 1, 2018. The exhibition explored the foundations of the Inka Road in earlier Andean cultures, technologies that made building the road possible, the cosmology and political organization of the Inka world, and the legacy of the Inka Empire during the colonial period and in the present day. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, exhibit scripts, images, grant proposals, presentations, announcements, articles, and other related materials. Materials are in electronic format.
